Dahlgren West, also known as the Cleydael Settlement Area, is a 500-acre site adjacent to James Madison Parkway (Route 301). Currently zoned with a mix of uses, including commercial and industrial, Dahlgren West has been formally designated a Technology District by King George County. As part of a plan to encourage smart, clustered, and sustainable economic development in King George County, Dahlgren West is the site of a proposed data center campus that will drive substantial recurring revenue for the County while also delivering new jobs and infrastructure upgrades.
Dahlgren West will contribute substantial, steady revenue to King George County. Unlike other types of development, data centers do not significantly increase traffic, change the character of a community, or strain public resources such as emergency services and public schools. Instead, they operate in the background, generating significant municipal revenue which can be used to help secure a prosperous community future.
A data center is a facility that houses computer systems, servers, storage devices, networking equipment, and other components used for managing, storing, and processing data. It serves as the backbone of many digital services and applications.
Data centers are essential for organizations to store and manage their data, run applications, and provide services to customers and users. They ensure data availability, security, and reliability. Data centers are also more efficient than traditional distributed data networks.
A data center can take anywhere from 12-24 months to build. There are many factors that may come into play in that time frame, making this a general estimate.
Providing electric service to new data centers does not impact reliability for existing customers. As part of the planning process, developers and utilities work together to determine load expectations to ensure the grid meets all present and future demand. To that end, Dahlgren West has engaged with Northern Neck Electric Cooperative, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, and Dominion Energy to evaluate the impacts of this project and are working together to address them. As part of that process, Dahlgren West provided a phased development plan and a financial commitment for required upgrade costs. Through this collaborative approach, Dahlgren West will deliver a successful development while ensuring reliable power for existing customers.
